Building a Business Case for Community Engagement

The Business Case for Community Engagement:

If I asked you:

  • Is it good for business to take care of your employees?

  • Is it good for business to build happy, satisfied, loyal customers that care about your product or mission?

  • Is it good to address long term risks to your organization before they turn into a problem?

You’d probably say yes. Yet somehow our only marker for organization success is rooted in the idea that businesses are supposed to maximize Shareholder value, and nothing else.

The formula we have as CEOs is wrong.

Shareholders vs. Stakeholders

Still on the fence about whether community engagement is for you?  Here is some of the data that suggests doing well is good business.

  • 68% of job seekers want to work for a socially responsible company

  •  89% of Americans are likely to switch brands to one associated with a cause, given comparable price and quality

  •  90%of global consumers are interested to hear about a company's community engagement initiatives

  •  220% likelihood of new market expansion for socially responsible companies vs non-responsible

But what many businesses fail to understand is that the activation of corporate giving must be handled as strategically as any other business practice.  Without a strategy, good intentions run the risk of becoming waste and missed opportunity.
